Die-struck coins need a custom steel die cut first, which means tooling cost, a minimum quantity to justify it, and weeks of lead time. Laser engraving needs no die at all, so a run of twelve costs the same per coin to set up as a run of a thousand, and every coin in the batch can carry a different name or number. Die striking still wins on deep three-dimensional relief. For text, logos, unit crests and serial numbers, engraving gets there faster and cheaper.
Yes. After engraving we fill the recessed areas with durable enamel paint, which gives you the classic challenge-coin look with the design elements in color. We carry a wide range of enamel colors and can match specific unit or brand colors. Bold shapes hold enamel best, so very fine linework is better left as clean engraving.
The standard challenge coin is 1.75 inches across. We also do 1.5 inch coins, which suit giveaway quantities and tighter budgets, and 2 inch coins where the coin is being presented rather than handed out. Custom shapes and sizes are possible too. The larger the coin, the more room there is for a detailed crest to actually read.
Yes, on most coin sizes. Edge engraving is where unit mottos, years and serial numbers usually go, and it is run as a separate pass once the front and back are finished. It is worth deciding on early: the available edge depends on the coin thickness, so tell us if you want it before we pick the blank.
