Which hides mark cleanly, the smell, and bringing your own piece.
Full-grain and top-grain genuine leather engrave best, giving a rich, even burn with crisp edges. Coated and finished leathers behave according to whatever is on top of them, so results vary. Suede and nubuck take a mark but a much subtler one. With an unfamiliar hide we engrave a test patch on an offcut or a hidden area first, because leather is the one material that genuinely surprises you.
Briefly, yes. Engraving leather smells like a campfire while it is running, and stronger on some hides than others. It clears quickly, and once the piece is cleaned up you will not notice it. Our machines are vented, so nothing lingers in the shop or travels home with the finished piece.
Yes, and we do it often: wallets, belts, bags, journals, holsters, dog collars. Bring the piece to our Wilmington shop and we will look at it with you first. Leather is unpredictable enough that we would rather tell you honestly that a particular finish will not mark well than hand back something you are disappointed with.
Treat it exactly as you would any good leather item. Wipe it with a damp cloth rather than soaking it, condition it every few months, and keep it out of prolonged direct sun and heat. The engraving is burned into the hide and is permanent, so it will last as long as the leather does and darken with it.
