Light hardwoods with a tight grain give the best contrast: maple, birch and bamboo are excellent. Walnut and cherry engrave beautifully but darker on dark, so the effect is subtle rather than sharp. Softwoods like pine engrave easily, though the grain varies enough that the mark can come out uneven. Tell us the look you want and we will point you at the right wood for it.
Yes, though the finish decides the result rather than the wood underneath. The laser burns through paint or varnish to expose bare wood, which can look striking or muddy depending on what is on top. Some finishes also smoke heavily. Raw wood is the safe bet, but bring your finished piece and we will test a hidden corner before committing to the whole thing.
Yes. Engraving on wood is a burn into the surface of the timber, not a coating sitting on top of it, so there is nothing that can peel, flake or wash off. On a board that gets washed and oiled for years the mark will mellow in tone as the wood around it does, but it does not disappear. It is as permanent as the piece of wood is.
Yes, we cut wood up to about a quarter inch thick depending on the species. Signs, ornaments, coasters, puzzles and decorative shapes all start as cut parts. The useful part is combining the two: cutting the shape and engraving the detail in one setup means the artwork lines up with the edge exactly, which is very hard to achieve any other way.
