Slate is our main stone and the one that engraves best, thanks to its fine grain and layered structure. We also work with granite, marble, travertine, limestone and ceramic tile. Slate and dark granite reveal a lighter mark against a dark surface, while marble and pale granite frost to a clean white. Grain is what limits fine detail, so bolder artwork suits stone better.
Yes. Slate and granite are outdoor materials already, and the engraving is cut into the stone rather than applied on top of it, so weather cannot lift it. The thing to plan for is frost: water that sits in an engraved recess can spall the surface over hard winters. Seal an outdoor piece, keep it off wet ground, and it will outlast almost anything else we make.
Yes, and fine-grain slate gives the best result. We convert the photograph into a dot pattern, a technique called dithering, which the laser reproduces on the stone. High-contrast images work best, since stone has less tonal range to play with than glass. Granite and marble will hold a photo too, though their grain softens the finest detail.
Yes, bring your own slate, stone or tile to our Wilmington shop and we will look at it with you. Two things decide the outcome: quartz content, which can make stone spit and pit under the beam, and any sealer or coating already on the surface. We will tell you what to expect, and test an offcut first if there is one.
